Cyclone Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a rare highest-level cyclone as it shifts in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing deadly flash flooding and landslides.

This weather system, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to make landfall by midweek, based on data from weather experts.

Warnings of power cuts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as the hurricane brings up to 30 inches of precipitation and sea level surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," residents have been advised.

Melissa is the 13th cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in late autumn.

Highest-Level Storm Threat

A category five storm is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Although Melissa is projected to weaken to a Category 4 cyclone before reaching Jamaica, meteorologists said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it impacts the country.

Critical Safety Steps

With tropical storm-strength gusts and precipitation already expected long before it passes over Jamaica's central region - including potentially the national capital - warnings state that "preparations should be rushed to completion".

"Several days of damaging winds and intense precipitation are underway and will cause devastating and dangerous sudden floods and multiple mudslides," urged weather authorities.

The country's head of government Andrew Holness commented: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: you should be concerned.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage anxiety and any nervousness and concern is to remain prepared."

Locals are being instructed to protect their properties with sandbags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Wider Consequences

Alerts are also ongoing for regions of the neighboring country including the main city, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Mudslides presently generated by the hurricane have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.

Projected Path

The hurricane is forecast to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before passing across the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with Cuba, it is predicted to have weakened to a Category 3 storm.
