The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
