Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the existing assessment of casualties from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have risked – really, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground
