In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
